Can a Forestry Mulcher Grind Stumps?
The honest answer: a mulcher takes a stump flush to the ground — but it is not a stump grinder. Here is the difference and when it matters.
The short answer
A forestry mulcher will take a standing tree or an existing stump down flush with the ground — sometimes an inch or two below the surface. It will not dig out a stump below grade or grind deep roots the way a dedicated stump grinder does.
Why not
Mulcher teeth are built to cut wood in the air and at the surface. Running the drum into dirt destroys the teeth fast and throws rocks. Dirt and carbide do not get along, so no reputable operator will bury the head in the ground to chase a root system.
When flush-to-the-ground is enough
In these cases the mulch layer covers what is left, the stump rots in place over the next few years, and you never think about it again.

- —Opening up woods you want to walk, ride, or hunt
- —Cleaning up storm damage
- —Most pasture and food-plot prep where a little surface stump is acceptable
When you need real stump work
That is a different operation — a dedicated stump grinder for individual stumps, or an excavator for full root-ball removal. It is priced and scheduled separately from mulching.
- —Building pads, driveways, and foundations — stumps must come out entirely
- —Septic and utility trenches
- —Food plots that will be tilled or planted with equipment
- —Anywhere a root ball would heave or rot out and leave a hole
The practical way to handle it
Most properties need both, in the right order: mulch the whole area first so every stump is exposed and reachable, then do stump work only where the project actually requires it. Grinding every stump on five acres is money you did not need to spend.
